MAN JAILED FOR LIFE FOR SAVAGE MURDER OF HIS PARTNER IN LINCOLNSHIRE
A 28-year-old man named Shane Murphy has received a life sentence after being found guilty of causing the death of his partner, Marie Gibson, at her home in Louth. The attack, which happened on June 9, left Ms Gibson with severe injuries including head and facial trauma, and a broken glass shard embedded in her neck.
Murphy admitted to the killing but claimed that his actions were impaired by a mental health condition, reducing his responsibility.
The judge described Murphy as "shallow, self-absorbed, aggressive, and emotionless, lacking any decency," and stated that the assault was "horrifically prolonged and violent." The court imposed a minimum of 20 years before Murphy can be considered for parole.
During the court proceedings, evidence was presented that Murphy fled the crime scene, abandoning Ms Gibson in her final moments.
The prosecutor emphasized that the attack was "brutal and unrelenting," and the incident took place before a young child.
Lincoln Crown Court heard Murphy's attempt to justify the assault by claiming he was trying to restrain Ms Gibson, whom he alleged had attacked him with a baseball bat, breaking a mirror and causing a glass shard to cut her neck.
This explanation was called "utterly ridiculous" by prosecutors.
Detective Chief Inspector Karl Whiffen, leading the investigation, commented that "the violence involved was shocking," and expressed his amazement at how one person could inflict such harm on another.
