SEAN MCNALLY FROM HERSHAM SENTENCED FOR HISTORIC SEXUAL ABUSE IN SURREY CHURCH
Sean McNally, a 71-year-old former organ teacher and choirmaster at a church in Hersham, Surrey, has been handed a prison sentence of three years after being found guilty of historic sexual offenses committed against a young boy several decades ago.The court heard that McNally admitted to committing five separate sexual offences between the years 1973 and 1976. All of these offences were directed at the same victim, who was between the ages of 10 and 13 at the time. The abuse took place over a span of several years, during which McNally exploited the victim’s trust and faith. According to Surrey Police, McNally used religious coercion by making the young boy swear to God that he would not reveal what had happened, thereby attempting to silence him and maintain control over the situation.
In a statement, the Diocese of Guildford issued a formal apology to all survivors of abuse and to those affected by this distressing case. During the court proceedings, McNally pleaded guilty to two counts of indecency with a child and three counts of indecent assault on a male. These offences were committed while he was serving at St Peter’s Church in Hersham, a community where he held a position of trust and authority.
Police reports reveal that two of the charges involved more than 40 separate instances of inappropriate touching and indecent assault, highlighting the extent and repeated nature of the abuse. The NSPCC, a child protection charity, emphasized that McNally exploited his role within the church to groom and repeatedly abuse the young victim. They also acknowledged the victim’s bravery in coming forward to speak about the abuse, which occurred nearly fifty years ago.
During the investigation, the officer in charge praised the victim’s courage and resilience, reaffirming that allegations of non-recent abuse are taken seriously and thoroughly investigated regardless of how much time has passed. The case serves as a reminder that victims of abuse should feel supported and encouraged to come forward, and that their voices will be heard.
This sentencing underscores the importance of accountability and justice in cases of historic abuse, and aims to inspire others who may still be suffering in silence to seek help and justice.
