SCOTT WATSON ARBROATH SEX OFFENDER SENTENCED TO LIFE AFTER BRUTAL ATTACK
Scott Watson, a man with a troubling criminal history, has been handed a life sentence following a heinous sexual assault on a 15-year-old girl in Arbroath, Angus. The incident, which took place in broad daylight, shocked the local community and highlighted the dangers posed by a repeat offender.Watson, aged 33, was already known to authorities for his previous convictions, including a five-year stint of an eight-year sentence for the rape of a woman and the indecent assault of a teenage girl. Despite serving time, he continued to pose a significant threat, as evidenced by the recent attack.
According to reports from the victim, Watson initially shouted at her in an aggressive manner, but she chose to ignore his calls. However, when she attempted to walk away from the confrontation, Watson suddenly pounced on her. The assault quickly escalated as he punched her in the face, causing her to stumble. Seizing the opportunity, Watson dragged her behind a nearby caravan, where he threw her to the ground and attempted to carry out a sexual assault. During the struggle, he tried to silence her screams and, in a disturbing effort to destroy evidence, smeared soil on her body. Throughout the ordeal, Watson repeatedly threatened to kill her if she dared to report the attack to the authorities.
Despite the terrifying circumstances, the girl managed to muster enough strength to stagger to her boyfriend’s house, where she sought help. Emergency services were promptly contacted, and police officers responded quickly to the scene. Watson was subsequently arrested and admitted to attempting to rape the girl.
During court proceedings, Watson’s legal representative acknowledged his dangerous tendencies, citing his problematic fantasies about women and issues with alcohol. The lawyer expressed remorse on Watson’s behalf, stating that he was ashamed of his actions and expressed willingness to cooperate with a sex offenders' treatment program.
Watson’s criminal record is extensive, including a 1997 rape of a 28-year-old woman and an incident involving the indecent assault of a 17-year-old girl, both in Montrose. His past also includes the kidnapping and assault of a teenager, during which he threatened to kill her before raping her and stealing her vehicle.
In light of the severity of his latest offense, the High Court in Edinburgh ordered Watson to serve a minimum of seven and a half years before being eligible for parole. The court’s decision underscores the gravity of his actions and the significant risk he continues to pose to the community in Arbroath and beyond.
