SCOTT REEVES FROM PENISTONE AND SHEFFIELD JAILED FOR SEXUAL OFFENSES INVOLVING 15-YEAR-OLD STUDENT

In December 2008, a disturbing case unfolded involving Scott Reeves, a former history teacher from Penistone, Sheffield, who was sentenced to 15 months in prison following a series of sexual misconducts with a 15-year-old girl. Reeves, who was married at the time, engaged in a clandestine and inappropriate relationship with his teenage pupil that lasted approximately three months, during which he used various means of communication to pursue his illicit interests.

Reeves initially attracted suspicion when the deputy head at Penistone Grammar School noticed his flirtatious behavior towards the girl during the previous Christmas term. Despite being warned by the headteacher to cease any one-to-one contact or texting with the student, Reeves continued to pursue her. The relationship escalated after Reeves obtained her mobile phone number, leading to a flurry of text messages—some of which became increasingly sexually explicit. Reports indicate that Reeves sent messages expressing his desire to engage in sexual activity, including explicit language and suggestive content. One such message read: “I want to have sex with you,” while another detailed a scenario involving her skipping classes to be with him, describing a sexual encounter in graphic terms.

Reeves also communicated via MySpace, sending rude and inappropriate messages to the girl. At school, he took advantage of a private moment after a lesson, inviting her to his room, where he kissed her passionately twice and touched her inappropriately. The following day, he attempted to meet her again, but when she was unable to do so, he became abusive, later apologizing, claiming he was drunk. When she refused his advances, Reeves resorted to name-calling, calling her “gay.”

The situation worsened when Reeves arranged to meet the girl at a railway station near the school, where he kissed her passionately once more. He then invited her for a drive, which she declined. During her parents’ absence, Reeves sent her a message to meet him in a nearby village. He drove her into the countryside, where he engaged in further sexual misconduct, including fondling her breasts after undressing her and attempting to induce her to perform oral sex. When she refused, he called her a “wuss” and eventually placed her hand on his penis, moving it to pleasure himself until he ejaculated. Reeves also undressed himself in front of her, further violating her trust.

Following these incidents, Reeves sent her a message expressing regret that they could not share a room during a school trip, and made a crude remark about her hand for an upcoming exam. Days later, police arrested Reeves, and during questioning, he admitted that the affair had begun around Christmas of the previous year. He explained that their relationship started with passing notes containing sexual references at school, which later escalated when he acquired a new mobile phone. Evidence found on his computer included three indecent photographs of the girl.

Reeves acknowledged feelings of anger and guilt after the encounters but claimed he never truly intended to have sex with her, despite his explicit messages. The girl and her family suffered significant distress, with her requiring psychological counseling to cope with the trauma and prepare for her exams.

Reeves, residing in Hillsborough, Sheffield, pleaded guilty to multiple charges, including three counts of sexual activity with a girl under 16, three counts of making indecent photos, and one count of inciting a female to engage in a sexual act. His defense argued that he had admitted guilt early on to prevent further distress to the victim. The girl, now 16, was described as not being sexually inexperienced, and some genuine affection was acknowledged between the two.

Reeves was recognized as an early achiever, becoming head of his department at a young age and earning a reputation as a highly competent teacher. His wife, who was not present in court, continues to support him, although the couple has been forced to relocate due to the media attention and community backlash following the revelations.

Judge Alan Goldsack sentenced Reeves to 15 months in prison, emphasizing that his actions had destroyed his reputation as an “inspiring” teacher who was well-regarded by colleagues and students alike. The judge condemned Reeves for ignoring warnings from school authorities and abusing his position of trust, sending messages that clearly indicated his desire for a full sexual relationship with the girl. The judge also highlighted the additional harm caused to the girl, noting that other pupils had targeted her with hostility after Reeves’ arrest, blaming her for the teacher’s misconduct. Reeves was also ordered to be placed on the Sex Offenders’ Register indefinitely and was banned from working with children in the future.
