MAN WHO RAPED A WOMAN AFTER PRETENDING TO BE A TAXI DRIVER HAS BEEN JAILED
During spring 2025, a woman out in Sheffield with a friend decided to return home alone and left the club alone.
She believed she was getting into a taxi, with the driver, Shabir Sultani, asserting he was a licensed cab driver and would take her home.
Throughout the journey, Sultani offered her vodka, which she refused, before bringing her to her Chesterfield residence.
He then pursued her to her front door and forced his way into her home despite her protests for him to leave.
Inside, he persisted in kissing her and ultimately raped her.
She managed to push him away by kicking him.
He was identified from CCTV footage and license plate recognition technology of his vehicle.
Following his arrest, he was charged with rape and sexual assault.
The 27-year-old, residing on Sturton Road in Sheffield, denied the accusations, but a jury at Derby Crown Court found him guilty in November.
He appeared before the same court for sentencing on 3 February, where he was sentenced to 13 years in prison, with an additional seven years for dangerousness.
Additionally, Sultani was subject to a Sexual Harm Prevention Order, a restraining order preventing contact with the victim, and was ordered to register as a sex offender.
