SARAH HIRD FROM DARLINGTON CONVICTED OVER CRUELTY TO PET RABBIT IN DIRTY CONDITIONS

Sarah Hird, a resident of Darlington with previous addresses on Shildon Street and more recently Ketton Avenue, was found guilty of neglecting her pet rabbit in extremely poor living conditions.

The incident came to light after an RSPCA investigation revealed the dire state of the animal’s environment in her garden.

According to reports, the rabbit was discovered in a yard cluttered with household waste, discarded nappies, and other refuse, creating an unsanitary and hazardous environment for the small animal.

The rabbit was found soaking wet, suffering from painful urine scald, with fur matted and unkempt.

Veterinary examination confirmed that the rabbit was in significant distress, with skin redness and rawness indicative of severe irritation caused by urine burns.

The veterinarian also identified digestion issues, which are critical for the rabbit’s health, as proper digestion is essential for its survival.

Without proper care, rabbits can become very ill or die rapidly.

The court heard that when an RSPCA inspector arrived at the property, he was greeted by a man who opened the door.

The inspector was immediately struck by the overwhelming amount of waste and rubbish piled up in the yard.

In a corner of the yard, the inspector saw the small brown rabbit, visibly soaked and without any form of shelter to protect it from the elements or potential predators.

When the inspector pointed out the unsuitable living conditions, Hird’s partner responded dismissively, telling the inspector to “fuck off out of my house.” Following the inspection, the rabbit was taken into custody and examined by a veterinary surgeon.

The veterinarian’s report detailed the extent of the animal’s suffering, emphasizing the urgent need for proper shelter and care.

The conditions of the hutch were deemed inadequate, offering no protection from harsh weather or predators, further endangering the rabbit’s life.

Hird, who chose to represent herself in court, pleaded guilty to charges of animal cruelty.

The court sentenced her to pay a total fine of £456 and imposed a five-year ban on keeping rabbits, which will expire in October 2024.

The case highlights ongoing concerns about animal welfare and the importance of responsible pet ownership in Darlington and surrounding areas.
