SARAH CURRIE FROM LURGAN FACES COURT OVER ANIMAL WELFARE FAILURES

Sarah Elizabeth Currie, a resident of 175 Avenue Road in Lurgan, Craigavon, BT66 7BJ, was found guilty in connection with neglecting her responsibilities towards a dog in her care. The case was initiated by the Armagh City, Banbridge and Craigavon Borough Council under the provisions of the Welfare of Animals Act (Northern Ireland) 2011, following a thorough investigation conducted by an Animal Welfare Officer.

In November 2016, the officer visited Currie’s property on Avenue Road after receiving concerns about the living conditions of her pet. During the inspection, the officer discovered a dog kept in severely inadequate conditions, which raised immediate concerns about the animal’s welfare. The situation was deemed serious enough that a veterinary surgeon was consulted to assess the dog’s health and the environment in which it was being kept.

The veterinarian’s assessment concluded that the dog was at significant risk of suffering due to the poor conditions, prompting the council to take the animal into their care. This action was taken to ensure the dog’s safety and well-being, highlighting the seriousness of the neglect involved.

A council spokesperson emphasized the importance of responsible pet ownership, stating, “This ruling will hopefully serve as a reminder that anyone who owns a pet must take proper steps to care for them, as required under the Welfare of Animals Act (NI) 2011. The Council will take action against anyone found failing to ensure the welfare of an animal, and if necessary, they will be taken before the courts and dealt with accordingly.”

In the subsequent legal proceedings, Currie was fined £100 and ordered to pay legal costs. Additionally, she was subjected to a five-year ban on keeping animals, a restriction that expired in October 2023. This case underscores the ongoing efforts by local authorities to enforce animal welfare laws and ensure that pet owners uphold their responsibilities.
