SAMUEL ZAMMIT FROM ANDOVER AND DUNDEE SENTENCED FOR HORRIFIC SEXUAL OFFENCES IN DUNDEE

In April 2019, a man named Samuel Zammit, originally from Andover, Hampshire, was handed a severe nine-year prison sentence after being convicted of multiple heinous sexual crimes committed in Dundee. The offences included the brutal assault and rape of two young girls, as well as the rape and assault of a woman, with the incidents spanning over a period of time and involving multiple victims.

Samuel Zammit, aged 24 at the time of sentencing, was found guilty of a series of disturbing acts that took place in Dundee. The court heard that on a particular day, Zammit forcibly barricaded two young girls, both aged eight, inside a bedroom at a residence in Dundee. During this incident, he raped one of the girls and attempted to assault the second girl. These acts of sexual violence against children marked a particularly grave aspect of his criminal record.

In addition to the assaults on children, Zammit was also convicted of raping a 24-year-old woman on two separate occasions within the city. The first assault occurred on March 26, 2015, at an address in Dundee, where he pushed her onto a sofa, restrained her, and forcibly removed her underwear. The second incident took place in October 2016, under similar circumstances, with Zammit again pushing her onto a sofa and restraining her.

The court also found him guilty of assaulting the same woman during a period between March 1, 2015, and June 30, 2016. During this time, he repeatedly struck her in the stomach while she was pregnant, causing her significant distress and harm. Tragically, she later lost the pregnancy, an outcome linked to Zammit’s violent actions.

Further evidence presented in court revealed that Zammit was involved in the sexual assault of two girls on March 5, 2016. The jury reached majority verdicts that he raped one girl and attempted to rape another during this incident. The victim recounted to police that Zammit had raped her during a visit from England, stating, “I told him to stop but he just forced himself on me.”

During the trial, the court heard that Zammit’s actions extended beyond the physical assaults. His conduct included hitting the pregnant woman in the stomach during her early pregnancy, which contributed to her subsequent miscarriage. The judge, Lady Scott, emphasized the severity of Zammit’s crimes and the high risk he posed to society.

In her sentencing remarks, Lady Scott ordered that Zammit be subjected to a further three years of supervision after his release, warning that any breach of his licence conditions could result in his return to prison. She also mandated that Zammit remain on the sex offenders register indefinitely, reflecting the gravity of his offences and the potential danger he posed to the community.

Prior to sentencing, Lady Scott explained that she would provide a copy of her remarks to Zammit’s legal counsel so they could review her reasoning and ensure he understood the basis of her decision. This case underscores the serious nature of sexual violence and the ongoing risks associated with offenders like Samuel Zammit, whose actions have left lasting scars on his victims and the community in Dundee.
