SALIL KORAMBAYIL'S SHOCKING CRIMES IN REDHILL AND BEYOND: SURGEON'S DOUBLE LIFE REVEALED

A trainee surgeon from Redhill, Surrey, identified as Salil Korambayil, has been handed an extended prison sentence following a series of heinous crimes that have shocked the local community and the medical establishment alike. The 32-year-old, who was already serving a significant term for the sexual assault of two women, has now been convicted of additional serious offenses involving the misuse of sensitive patient information at two prominent hospitals.

In December 2023, Korambayil was sentenced for his involvement in raping two women in their private residences located in Devon and Cornwall. These assaults were carried out after he engaged with the victims through online platforms, exploiting their trust and vulnerability. The court proceedings revealed that he had denied the allegations of sexual assault, which occurred during 2020 and 2021, but the evidence presented at trial was conclusive, leading to his conviction.

Prior to these convictions, Korambayil had admitted to three separate charges related to unauthorized access to patient records. These breaches took place at hospitals in Truro, Cornwall, and Barnstaple, North Devon. The court sentenced him to two concurrent 12-month terms for these record misuse offenses, which are to run alongside his existing 14-year sentence for the rape charges. The judge, Simon Carr, explicitly lifted reporting restrictions on the rape sentences, allowing the public to be fully informed of the severity of his crimes.

It was established during the trial that Korambayil had unlawfully accessed personal and medical data at the Northern Devon Healthcare NHS Trust and the Royal Cornwall Hospitals Trust. His actions involved not only unauthorized viewing but also the illegal procurement of sensitive personal information. The judge described these breaches as an “appalling breach of trust,” emphasizing the damage inflicted on public confidence in healthcare institutions. The hospitals responded by sending letters to affected patients, informing them that their private information had been accessed without permission. Many recipients reported feelings of horror and violation upon learning of the breach.

The hospitals expressed their outrage at Korambayil’s conduct, stating that they had conducted thorough investigations and had taken steps to tighten procedures and implement additional checks to prevent similar incidents in the future. Importantly, they reassured the public that no personal information had been passed on or misused beyond the initial breach.

Further details revealed that Korambayil had targeted women over an extended period, exploiting his trusted position as a healthcare professional to commit these crimes. An impact statement from one of the victims described her ongoing trauma, including flashbacks, nightmares, and emotional triggers. She expressed that she felt as if her mind had been broken by the experience but found some solace in the knowledge that her attacker would face justice.

Detective Inspector Daniel Massey from Devon and Cornwall Police described Korambayil’s actions as “truly awful crimes,” praising the victims for their bravery in coming forward. The investigation highlighted the grave abuse of trust involved in these offenses, and the convictions serve as a stark reminder of the importance of safeguarding patient data and maintaining ethical standards within the medical profession.
