RYAN FOWLER OF MONMOUTH CONVICTED FOR ANIMAL CRUELTY IN SOUTH WALES
Ryan James Fowler, born around 1980 and residing at Monmow Keep, Monmouth NP25 3EX, was convicted in 2022 for keeping ten pet snakes in deplorable conditions.Fowler faced prosecution following an investigation by the RSPCA. He pleaded guilty to two offences related to animal welfare, including causing unnecessary suffering to a female royal python, often referred to as a 'banana spider' type, by failing to seek prompt and adequate veterinary treatment for her poor health.
In a statement read to the court, RSPCA inspector Sophie Daniels reported her findings upon entering Fowler’s flat. She discovered ten snakes, with eight located in the bedroom—seven of these were royal pythons while one was a boa constrictor.
Inspector Daniels described the conditions: “All eight snakes were kept in small plastic tubs with no hiding spots or enrichment. None could fully stretch out, and in many cases, could not even extend half their length. There was no water present, and the room had an unpleasant smell.”
She added that almost all the snakes appeared underweight or dehydrated to varying degrees, with one being extremely thin, displaying a triangular body shape, and showing limited responsiveness compared to the others.
A veterinary surgeon’s written statement submitted to the court confirmed that all but one of the snakes were in poor body condition.
The snakes were confiscated and taken into the RSPCA's care, where their health has since improved. They are now set to be rehomed.
As part of his sentencing, Fowler was fined £1,190, which includes fines, costs, and a surcharge. He received a five-year ban on keeping reptiles, set to expire in October 2027.
This case was reported by the South Wales Argus.
