RUSSELL MARRINER AND WILLIAM MARRINER BANNED FROM KEEPING ANIMALS AFTER BRUTAL ATTACK IN HARROGATE
In March 2021, a disturbing incident unfolded in Harrogate that shocked the local community and highlighted the cruelty some individuals are capable of. A small white terrier named Ted was discovered in a state of severe distress, covered in blood and suffering from multiple injuries, after what authorities have described as a horrific attack carried out by a father and son duo.Police responded to reports of animal cruelty at a residence in Harrogate, where they found Ted in a dire condition. The dog was visibly covered in dried blood, with a significant wound on the top of his head. Despite the claims made by the suspects, Russell Marriner, aged 56, and his son William Marriner, aged 20, neither could produce any wounds to support their assertion that Ted had attacked them. Instead, the bloodstains and injuries pointed to a violent assault.
Officers observed blood splattered across the living room, including on a metal vegetable steamer that was covered in blood, an axe, and a cardboard box with blood smears. The scene painted a grim picture of the attack that had taken place. Veterinary examinations confirmed the severity of Ted’s injuries. The vet noted bruising to his upper lip, a fractured tooth, and wounds affecting his gums. Additionally, Ted had bruising on his tongue, his left eye, and both ears' pinnae. Clipping his fur revealed small, circular wounds that matched the pattern of holes on the metal vegetable steamer, suggesting the object was involved in the attack.
Further diagnostic imaging, including radiographs, uncovered that Ted had a dislocated hip, adding to the list of injuries sustained during the assault. Despite his trauma, the dog was rescued and subsequently placed in a new loving home through the York Animal Centre, where he is now receiving the care and affection he deserves.
In court proceedings held earlier this month at Harrogate Magistrates’ Court, both Russell and William Marriner received 18-week prison sentences, which were suspended for 18 months. The court also imposed a strict ban preventing them from owning or keeping any animals for a period of ten years. Additionally, the pair was ordered to participate in a six-month alcohol treatment program, reflecting the court’s concern over their conduct and the circumstances surrounding the attack.
