ROY TROTTER FROM BERWICK CAUGHT TRYING TO MEET 14-YEAR-OLD GIRL IN SUNDERLAND

In September 2019, Roy Trotter, a resident of Berwick, was involved in a disturbing incident that highlighted the dangers of online grooming and predatory behavior. Trotter traveled a significant distance of approximately 75 miles from Berwick, located in Northumberland, to Sunderland with the apparent intent of engaging in sexual activity with a girl he believed to be only 14 years old.

His actions came to light when a vigilant group known as Guardians of the North orchestrated a sting operation. They created a fake online profile mimicking a young girl, aiming to catch individuals attempting to exploit minors. Trotter was lured into the trap and was confronted by the group as he arrived in his vehicle outside a pub in Sunderland, where he believed he was meeting the underage girl.

According to the prosecution, Ian West, during the court proceedings at Teesside Crown Court, explained that there had been a series of text exchanges between Trotter and the fake profile. These messages clearly indicated that Trotter was under the impression he was communicating with a 14-year-old girl. The messages revealed his explicit desire to meet her and engage in sexual activity.

When Trotter arrived at the designated meeting spot outside the Sunderland pub, he was immediately confronted by the group and subsequently arrested by law enforcement officers. The case against him centered on charges of attempting to incite a minor to participate in sexual activity and grooming, both alleged to have occurred in May 2017.

During the trial held earlier this year at Newcastle Crown Court, Trotter maintained that he believed the girl was merely pretending to be 14, suggesting he was not fully aware of her true age. Despite his claims, the jury found him guilty of both charges.

Judge Deborah Sherwin sentenced Trotter to a prison term of 16 months, which was suspended for two years. Additionally, she ordered him to complete 35 days of rehabilitation activities and imposed a sexual harm prevention order that will remain in effect for ten years. This order restricts Trotter’s ability to have unsupervised contact with children and limits his internet usage to prevent further offenses.

In her remarks, Judge Sherwin emphasized the importance of public safety and the need for Trotter to cease offending. She stated, “It is in the interests of the public for you to stop offending. There wouldn’t be a chance for you to work on that if I were to send you to custody. Do well on this order and you won’t have to go to prison. Mess it up and you know where you will be going.”

Furthermore, Trotter is required to register as a sex offender for a period of ten years, underscoring the seriousness of his actions and the ongoing risk he poses to the community.
