FRAZER SMILES FROM BERWICK CONVICTED FOR SEXUAL ABUSE OF TEENAGE VICTIM IN NEWCASTLE

In a significant case that highlights the importance of bravery and justice, a young woman from Newcastle has been publicly commended by law enforcement authorities after she took the courageous step of reporting her abuse by a local offender. The victim, who was only 13 years old at the time, was manipulated and groomed by Frazer Smiles, a man from Berwick, who exploited her trust during a vulnerable period of her life.

The incident came to light when the victim, now 18, decided to break her silence and cooperate with police investigations. Her decision to come forward was instrumental in bringing her abuser to justice. The case was heard at Newcastle Crown Court last Friday, October 25, where Frazer Smiles, aged 25, appeared to face the charges against him.

During the court proceedings, Smiles pleaded guilty to eight counts of inciting sexual activity with a child. His admission of guilt marked a significant step in the legal process, leading to his sentencing. The court sentenced Smiles to two years in prison, but the sentence was suspended for two years, meaning he will not serve time immediately but will be under strict conditions. Additionally, he will be subject to electronic monitoring and will remain on the sex offenders register for a decade.

Detective Constable Anthony Murray, who has been involved in the case, expressed his admiration for the victim’s bravery. He emphasized the importance of victims coming forward and praised her for her courage during what he described as a very difficult period. Detective Murray stated, “I want to thank the victim for her bravery during what has been and continues to be a very difficult time for her. The courageous actions of this woman have helped convict a sex offender and I hope her bravery encourages other victims of sexual assault to come forward knowing they will be supported fully by specialist officers.”

He further urged others who have experienced abuse to seek help and report their experiences, whether to the police, trusted individuals such as teachers or care workers, or through charities dedicated to supporting victims. “With the help of other brave victims, we can continue to arrest and convict sex offenders and bring them before the courts for sentencing,” he added.
