ROSS MCCRUM: MAN SENTENCED TO 11 YEARS AFTER AYRSHIRE RAPE CHARGES
A man who targeted girls as young as 14 across Ayrshire and Lanarkshire has received a prison sentence after being convicted of numerous sexual crimes.Ross McCrum, aged 27 and from Uddingston, was found guilty of 20 charges at the High Court in Glasgow on October 27.
The offences included rape, sexual assault, and communications of a sexual nature with females and minors as young as 14 years old.
The crimes took place between June 2014 and January 2020, occurring in locations such as Uddingston, Lanarkshire, Irvine, and a hotel in Ayr.
Sentenced to 11 years in prison, McCrum will also be on the sex offenders register indefinitely.
His violations involved raping two victims, sharing explicit photos of himself, and attempting to meet some of the girls for sex, one of whom was only 14.
He also coerced a teen into sending him intimate images.
One girl, aged 14, was raped in Uddingston in 2014, with prosecutors stating he forced her into a store cupboard.
A second victim was assaulted at the same location in 2019.
That same year, he sexually assaulted a 15-year-old girl at the Ayr hotel.
Additionally, McCrum sent explicit photos to a girl aged 13 and pressured a reluctant 15-year-old to share images of herself.
During the trial, his defense lawyer, Edward Targowski KC, mentioned that McCrum displayed signs of social and sexual immaturity, likely linked to his low IQ and learning difficulties.
Detective Sergeant Mark Nelson of Coatbridge CID expressed hope that the court’s ruling would provide some relief to the victims and their families.
He commended those who reported the abuse for their bravery and urged others to come forward, assuring that all reports of sexual abuse are thoroughly investigated, regardless of timing, with full support for victims.
The conviction underscores the importance of speaking out against abuse and reinforces Police Scotland’s commitment to thorough investigations.
