BRIGHTON DOG OWNER BANNED FOR NEGLECTING OVERWEIGHT DOG
A dog owner named Ronald West, residing in Donald Road, Brighton, was found guilty of neglecting his dog, Taz.
The city magistrates at an earlier hearing convicted him of neglect, and more recently, he was banned from keeping animals for 12 months.
He was also ordered to pay kennel costs of £1,477, and it was decided that his dog would be rehomed.
Taz, a five-year-old border collie, was found to weigh 88lb (40kg) after West failed to improve his diet.
Animal welfare officers who visited his flat last December reported finding dog feces in every room.
During the interview, West stated that the dog was overweight because it was given too many treats by him and his friends.
He also admitted to being unwell with flu, which prevented him from cleaning the flat or walking the dog.
Despite acknowledging that the dog was overweight, West claimed that he never mistreated the animal and intended to do something about it.
Magistrates and animal welfare officers emphasized that overfeeding an animal is as cruel as starving it, as the dog suffered physical strain and health issues.
The officers expressed that the dog Taz would now be able to receive proper care in a new home and that this was the correct decision for his well-being.
