SHERIFF IN ABERDEEN DESCRIBES RONALD PIRIE'S OFFENCES AS AMONG THE MOST DISTURBING HE'S SEEN IN 30 YEARS
In September 2017, a sheriff in Aberdeen described the case of Ronald Pirie, a former oil and gas worker, as one of the most disturbing he had encountered in three decades. Pirie, aged 49 and residing on Johnston Gardens in Peterculter, appeared at Aberdeen Sheriff Court to admit to a series of heinous sex offences committed over nearly ten years. He pleaded guilty to 'covertly recording' women while they were changing at Beach Leisure Centre in Aberdeen and to filming an underage girl during her shower. Pirie was sentenced to 25 months in prison and will be on the sex offender register for ten years.
The charges against him included 13 counts, although he was convicted of nine. Prosecutors accepted his not guilty plea regarding an allegation that he attached cameras to his shoes to capture footage of women’s dresses.
Pirie’s misconduct came to public attention when he shared 'disturbing' footage with a colleague at the Senergy oil and gas firm in Aberdeen two years prior. He also admitted to giving Matthew Rothnie a USB stick containing footage of a woman engaged in sexual activity with a dog. Additionally, on September 23, 2015, he deliberately caused two individuals to view online 'extreme pornography.'
Prosecutor Jamie Dunbar detailed a particularly troubling incident, revealing that Pirie filmed himself watching child pornography while lying next to a sleeping woman. Pirie’s solicitor, Iain Hingston, explained that his client had just returned from working as a boat captain in the Philippines to face these serious charges.
Sheriff Graeme Napier commented on the severity and nature of the case, stating, 'This is one of the most disturbing cases I have dealt with, given the wide-ranging nature of these offences and the length of time over which they were perpetrated. It is one of the more unusual cases I have had to deal with in my 30 years as a sheriff. The behaviour is such that, in an earlier time, it would have been described as depraved. There was a controlling element, which makes it all the more insidious.'
