OFFENDER WITH BIZARRE ATTITUDE JAILED FOR ATTEMPTED MURDER OF MOTHER
An offshore worker named Ronald MacIver almost killed his mother, Alexandra, in a violent attack during Hogmanay, as revealed in a court case.MacIver, aged 50, was convicted of attempting to murder his 69-year-old mother at her residence in Edinbane, Skye, in December 2018.
He was sentenced to 10 years in prison after the court found the evidence of his guilt 'overwhelming'.
During his trial in Glasgow, it was presented that MacIver attacked his mother after accusing her of being cheeky, grabbing her by the throat, shaking her, and then violently punching and kicking her in the head and body.
The assault caused severe injuries — a broken cheekbone and an fractured eye socket.
After the attack, MacIver contacted emergency services, claiming he had 'just killed his mother stone dead,' saying, 'You’d better send the police.
I’ve just killed my mother stone dead.
I just lost my temper.
She was being cheeky and I lost my temper.
Simple as that.' The court heard that his mother had no memory of the assault, having been taken to Raigmore Hospital.
His defense argued that his mother was assaulted by someone else, but MacIver refused to testify in his own defense, leading the jury to find him guilty of assault causing severe injury, disfigurement, impairment, and posing a danger to life.
The medical report described his mental state as suffering from 'drug-induced psychosis' at the time of the attack, and his attitude to the case as 'bizarre'.
The judge, Lord Sanderson, emphasized the violence inflicted and stated, 'It’s only by great good fortune that you are not now embarking on a life sentence for her murder.' MacIver has a history of violent offenses, including three convictions for assault and a stabbing of his brother.
The court assessed that he shows no remorse and is at high risk of committing further serious harm, raising public protection concerns.
