RONALD FOSTER FROM GATESHEAD AND WARDLEY SENTENCED FOR DECADES-OLD INDECENT ASSAULTS
In a case that has deeply shocked the local community, Ronald Foster, a man with longstanding ties to Gateshead and Wardley, has been sentenced to nine months in prison for a series of indecent assaults that spanned over two decades. The court proceedings, held at Newcastle Crown Court, revealed disturbing details about Foster’s crimes, which had remained hidden for years.Foster, who is approaching his 81st birthday, was brought before the court to face charges related to his abuse of a young girl, beginning when she was only seven years old. The victim, now an adult, displayed remarkable courage by finally coming forward, breaking a silence that had lasted for many years. Her testimony was emotional and powerful, as she recounted the pain and trauma inflicted upon her during her childhood.
She was present in the courtroom, sitting just a few feet away from Foster, as he awaited his sentencing. The emotional toll was evident, and she was overcome with tears when Foster, a frail man living in warden-controlled accommodation on Kier Hardie Avenue in Wardley, was led away to serve his sentence. The court heard that Foster’s crimes extended into the mid-1990s, with five charges of indecent assault being formally admitted by him.
Judge Richard Lowden, presiding over the case, emphasized that Foster’s age, health, or apparent remorse could not mitigate the severity of his actions. He stated, “These are grave offences. It is clear that this has had a far greater effect on the victim than you appreciated and perhaps still appreciate. There can unfortunately be no alternative to an immediate custodial sentence.”
As part of his sentence, Foster is also required to register as a sex offender for the next ten years, a measure intended to protect the community and prevent further harm. The court was told that Foster had assaulted his victim at his former residence in Birtley and on multiple occasions in his car. The prosecution highlighted that Foster had discussed pornographic films and described in detail the acts he committed, revealing a disturbing pattern of predatory behavior.
During the hearing, the victim, identified as Jane Waugh, delivered a heartfelt personal statement. She described her ongoing struggles with depression, which was diagnosed during her teenage years, and her difficulty in coping with both school and university life. She expressed that her childhood had been stolen from her and that her life had been profoundly affected by Foster’s actions. Waugh stated, “It has ruined my life, but I hope that by speaking out in court, I can find some measure of closure.”
Foster, who was once regarded as a respected family man, immediately admitted his guilt when confronted last year. His defense lawyer, Julie Clemitson, argued that he was already paying a heavy price for his crimes, expressing remorse and shame. She told the court, “He feels great remorse and shame. He was a man who was respected, but all of that is lost now.”
The case has left a lasting impact on the community, highlighting the importance of justice and the courage required for victims to come forward and seek accountability for their suffering.
