RONALD CLARKE SENTENCED IN BARROW FOR REPEATED CHILD SEXUAL ABUSE
In a case that has shocked the community of Barrow, Ronald Clarke, aged 69, was sentenced to nine years in prison after being found guilty of multiple charges of child rape. The offences, which spanned approximately three decades, involved the repeated sexual abuse of a teenage girl, with the court hearing harrowing details of the victim’s suffering.Preston Crown Court was the venue for the sentencing, where Clarke appeared after earlier admitting to six counts of rape. The court was told that Clarke’s actions were not isolated incidents but part of a prolonged pattern of abuse that began in a park, where he allegedly used threats to intimidate his young victim. Prosecutor Mr. Nick Kennedy described how Clarke told the girl that if she told lies, she could be placed in a “bad girl’s home,” a comment that added to her distress during the initial assault.
During the proceedings, it was revealed that the victim was crying and visibly upset during the first incident. Clarke reportedly told her that “what she wanted and what she got were two different things,” a statement that underscored the manipulative and coercive nature of his conduct. The court heard that subsequent rapes followed, with Clarke using the girl as a “sex object,” regardless of her feelings or wishes, demonstrating a complete disregard for her well-being.
The impact of the abuse on the victim was described as devastating, with her life later descending into chaos and emotional turmoil. The case came to light after Clarke was arrested in July of the previous year on suspicion of rape. Prior to his arrest, the victim’s partner had approached police, revealing concerns about past sexual abuse by Clarke. During police interviews, Clarke admitted to having sexual relations with the girl about four times, although he had no previous criminal convictions.
Clarke’s defence lawyer, Mr. Brian Williams, acknowledged his client’s age and health issues, noting that Clarke would soon turn 70 and suggesting that these factors would not prevent a prison sentence. Williams expressed remorse, stating that Clarke was aware of the terrible nature of his actions from 30 or 35 years ago and accepted that he must now face the consequences. The court was also informed that Clarke will be registered as a sex offender for life and will be barred from working with children in the future.
Judge Pamela Badley delivered a stern verdict, emphasizing the severity of the crimes and the profound effect on the victim. She stated, “You had no thought for her in your activities. You just took from her.” The judge highlighted the victim’s tragic testimony and the lasting harm caused by Clarke’s abuse. She concluded that only a lengthy custodial sentence could serve justice in this case, reiterating that Clarke’s understanding of the harm inflicted was very limited.
Detective Sergeant Chris Bethell of Barrow’s Public Protection Unit expressed satisfaction with the outcome, praising the victim’s strength and courage in reporting the abuse. He noted that her determination played a crucial role in securing the conviction, especially as Clarke had changed his plea to guilty at the last minute to avoid facing her testimony at trial. The case underscores the importance of vigilance and support for victims of prolonged sexual abuse, and the community of Barrow can now hope for some measure of justice for the young girl who endured such suffering.
