ROBIN FRENCH WARNED IN SOUTH SHIELDS AFTER DOMESTIC ASSAULTS
A repeat domestic offender, Robin French, has been warned that he risks returning to prison if he does not cease his abusive behavior.
French assaulted his former partner at her South Shields home during a social gathering.
When a friend of the victim attempted to film the assault on her phone, French turned on her, punching her and stealing her device.
The 44-year-old, who has a history of domestic violence convictions, pleaded guilty to two counts of common assault and theft of a mobile phone.
Despite having served time in prison since the incident, a judge chose not to send him directly back behind bars.
Instead, French was issued a firm warning to change his conduct and stop targeting women.
Recorder Toby Hedworth QC remarked: "You behaved in a disgraceful and thuggish way towards two women.
Fortunately for you, they were neither of them seriously injured, but it must have been terrifying for them.
Women are not your punchbags." He was sentenced to 24 weeks in prison, suspended for two years, and ordered to complete a Building Better Relationships programme.
Additionally, a five-year restraining order was imposed to prevent him from contacting his ex-partner.
The judge emphasized that any future abusive actions could lead to much more severe penalties, stating: "The charges I expect will be at a very much higher level and the sentences will be more severe."
