COUNTY DURHAM PAEDOPHILE HANDED SUSPENDED SENTENCE FOR CHILD ABUSE IMAGES

A paedophile from County Durham, Robert Welsh, aged 57, was discovered with disturbing images depicting child abuse.

During investigations, it emerged that Welsh, who worked as a carer, was experiencing suicidal thoughts and had turned to social media platform Kik for support.

However, he was also found possessing nearly 50 illicit images, including 18 classified as Category A, which showed children being sexually exploited by adults, along with additional images in Categories B and C.

Welsh appeared in Durham Crown Court to face charges of producing and possessing indecent images of children, for which he pleaded guilty.

Prosecutor Sean Dryden revealed that Welsh repeatedly installed and reinstalled Kik to conceal his activity while viewing these images.

The court noted Welsh’s history of mental health problems, including a fatal car accident in 1991 and the end of a long-term relationship.

His legal representatives highlighted his social isolation, mental health struggles, and the fact that he does not sexually interest in children, emphasizing his remorse.

Judge James Adkin described the images as 'repellent' and sentenced Welsh to eight months in prison, suspended for two years.

Welsh was also ordered to undertake 50 days of rehabilitation, subjected to a four-month electronic curfew, registered as a sex offender for ten years, and subjected to a sexual harm prevention order lasting the same duration.
