ROBERT SUTCLIFFE BANNED FROM TEACHING IN LEEDS AFTER CHILD INDECENCY OFFENSES

Robert Sutcliffe, a 38-year-old primary school teacher, has been prohibited from working in the education sector following his admission to distributing indecent images of children. At the time of his arrest in March 2021, Sutcliffe was serving as an assistant headteacher at Knowleswood Primary School in Leeds.

In July 2022, Sutcliffe pleaded guilty in Leeds Crown Court to the charges, receiving a 20-month prison sentence which was suspended for two years. Subsequently, a misconduct hearing conducted by the Teaching Regulation Agency (TRA) concluded that he should be barred from teaching roles or any child care facilities across England.

The TRA emphasized that Sutcliffe’s conduct “fell significantly short of the standards expected of the profession,” underscoring that his offenses were especially serious given his position as an educator. The panel stated, “public interest considerations far outweighed any interest in retaining Mr. Sutcliffe in the profession.”

Despite Sutcliffe’s expression of “substantial remorse” and acknowledgment of his underlying issues, the Secretary of State raised concerns about the potential for future offenses. The Secretary highlighted, “the lack of full insight or remorse means that there is some risk of the repetition of this behaviour and this puts at risk the future wellbeing of pupils.”

It was noted that Sutcliffe did not attend the misconduct hearing on April 3. His offending behavior was committed prior to his departure from Knowleswood Primary and before the school became part of the Exceed Academies Trust, which he left in April 2021. The Trust reassured the public that the offenses did not involve any children currently enrolled at the school.
