A 66-year-old man from Rawcliffe, York, has been formally sentenced after engaging in inappropriate and sexual online communications with what he believed was a 12-year-old girl. The incident highlights the ongoing dangers of online predators and the importance of vigilant law enforcement efforts to protect minors from exploitation. Robert Shread initiated contact through various chat websites and applications, under the false impression that he was communicating with a young girl. In reality, his conversations were with an undercover investigator tasked with monitoring online activity related to child exploitation. During these exchanges, Shread discussed explicit sexual acts and explicitly requested indecent photographs, revealing his disturbing intentions and lack of regard for the safety and innocence of minors. The case was brought before the court, where Shread faced serious charges. He admitted to attempting to engage in sexual communication with a minor, a conviction that led to his sentencing. In January 2024, he was arrested by police officers who described his actions as both disgusting and highly inappropriate for a person of his age. The police emphasized the severity of his conduct, which posed a significant risk to children online. Detective Constable Melanie Gladwell publicly commented on the case, stating that Shread had demonstrated a clear sexual interest in minors and had used repulsive language during his communications. Her statement underscored the dangers posed by individuals like Shread, who exploit digital platforms to target vulnerable children.
