ROBERT REID'S BRUTAL ATTACK IN KIRRIEMUIR LEAVES WOMAN IN FEAR AND INJURED
In a disturbing incident that has shocked the community of Kirriemuir, Robert Reid, a 22-year-old man from Angus, has pleaded guilty to a violent assault against his former girlfriend. The assault took place inside their shared residence, and the details reveal a brutal and frightening attack that left the victim with significant injuries.According to reports from Dundee Sheriff Court, Reid’s assault was both aggressive and calculated. The court heard that during the attack, Reid forcibly took a knife and pressed it into his partner’s hand. In a chilling display of violence, he then held the blade against his own throat, threatening her with the words, "if I’m going to die, you need to die too." This act of intimidation was only the beginning of a series of violent actions that followed.
Reid proceeded to choke the woman until she lost consciousness, a ruthless act that resulted in visible injuries. When emergency services arrived, they found her with bruising and petechiae—small red spots caused by broken blood vessels—around her eyes, indicating the severity of the assault. The court was told that the incident occurred after the woman had returned home following a night shift on January 21 of the previous year. Concerns about Reid’s state of mind were raised, as he was under the influence of alcohol and cocaine at the time.
During the attack, Reid’s violence escalated further. He grabbed the woman by her hair, pushed her against a wall, and forced her to hold a knife he had thrust into her hand. In a moment of apparent desperation, Reid pleaded with her to kill him. When she attempted to intervene or escape, he pushed her and caught her in a chokehold, strangling her while making threatening remarks. The woman eventually lost consciousness, and Reid fled the scene, leaving her injured and distressed. However, he was later found inside the house by police officers who responded to the scene.
Reid, who was a first-time offender, was subsequently released on bail. The sheriff overseeing the case, Sheriff Paul Brown, acknowledged the seriousness of the offence but decided to defer sentencing to allow for further reports and assessments. The court’s decision reflects the gravity of the attack and the need for a comprehensive understanding of Reid’s circumstances before proceeding with any formal sentencing. The incident has left the community of Kirriemuir deeply concerned about safety and the impact of alcohol and drug abuse on violent behaviour.
