ROBERT OLIVER FROM BURSTLEM INVOLVED IN SEXUAL OFFENSES IN STOKE-ON-TRENT AND TUNSTALL
In June 2020, Robert Oliver, a resident of Burslem, was convicted of serious sexual offenses involving a minor and was subsequently sentenced to prison. The case revealed a disturbing pattern of grooming and exploitation carried out by Oliver, who had a troubling criminal history linked to his past convictions.Oliver, aged 26 at the time, initially established an online friendship with a 14-year-old girl through Snapchat. The communication began innocuously, with Oliver offering advice and support regarding her personal issues. However, as their online relationship progressed, his tone shifted, and he started to make inappropriate comments. He referred to her as a ‘little stunner’ and ‘sexy,’ and expressed a desire to meet her in person, suggesting he would take her to his home. The girl, aware of her mother’s disapproval, told Oliver that her mother would not permit such a meeting.
When she mentioned Oliver’s name to her family, they decided to investigate further. Their concerns grew when they uncovered Oliver’s criminal record, which included a 2017 conviction for engaging in sexual activity with a child, meeting a child following sexual grooming, and creating indecent images of children. This revelation prompted her family to take action, and they reported their findings to the authorities.
Following the discovery, Oliver’s online interactions with the girl continued for approximately four months. Despite the restrictions imposed by a sexual harm prevention order, which explicitly prohibited him from contacting anyone under 16, Oliver violated these terms by sending her a friend request on Snapchat under the username ‘its_bert18’ and initiating regular communication. Prosecutor Neil Ahuja explained that Oliver’s profile featured an emoji cartoon as his image, and he maintained daily contact with the girl.
During their conversations, Oliver inquired about her age, to which she responded that she was 14. His reaction was dismissive, saying, “Oh God, I best go,” and explaining, “Because I’m 26.” Despite this, they continued to communicate, and the girl viewed him as a trusted friend. However, Oliver’s intentions soon turned sinister. He began making inappropriate comments, including saying he ‘wanted to touch her bottom,’ and suggested he could support her by visiting her at her home, either by car or taxi. When she expressed concern that her mother would disapprove, Oliver suggested she could lie about staying overnight with friends.
As the girl grew increasingly uncomfortable, her father confronted Oliver via Snapchat after she disclosed her concerns. This confrontation led Oliver to make threats, claiming he knew her address and could find her. Police tracked him down to a friend’s house in Tunstall, where officers found him hiding under a mattress. During the arrest, they seized his mobile phone and tablet from beneath the bed. Oliver refused to comment during police interviews but later pleaded guilty to breaching the sexual harm prevention order.
In a victim impact statement, the girl expressed her distress, stating, “When he threatened me with coming to my home, I did not sleep that night. I was terrified.” She also expressed relief that she had spoken out, hoping to prevent other girls from experiencing similar trauma.
Judge Paul Glenn sentenced Oliver to 20 months in prison for breaching the order, emphasizing the severity of his actions by describing them as “classic grooming activity.”
In a separate incident from April 2017, Oliver’s criminal behavior was even more disturbing. He had unprotected sex with a 14-year-old girl after grooming her on Facebook. Oliver, then aged 23, falsely claimed to be a teenager himself to gain her trust. He encouraged her to send intimate photographs, which he reciprocated by sending images of his private parts. He then persuaded her to meet him at a house, where they engaged in sexual activity.
The girl’s friend later informed a teacher, leading to police involvement. It was discovered that Oliver had also sent indecent images of himself to her mother, and police found over 100 indecent images of children on his phone. Oliver was charged with multiple offenses, including sexual activity with a child, meeting a child following sexual grooming, and distributing indecent images.
He pleaded guilty and was sentenced to 32 months in prison at Stoke-on-Trent Crown Court. The court imposed a lifelong Sexual Harm Prevention Order and ordered him to register as a sex offender for life. Judge Glenn condemned Oliver’s actions, highlighting the manipulative and predatory nature of his conduct, and underscored the serious breach of trust involved in his offenses.
