ROBERT MCKEOWN CRUMLIN KUNG FU INSTRUCTOR ADMITS TO ABUSE OF YOUNG GIRLS
In a case that has shocked the community of Crumlin, County Antrim, Robert Thomas McKeown, a 42-year-old kung fu instructor, has admitted to a series of serious sexual offenses involving young girls in his class. The incidents, which spanned over a period of 18 months, involved multiple counts of indecency and gross indecency, highlighting a disturbing breach of trust by someone entrusted with the care and education of children.McKeown, who resides at Bramblewood in Crumlin, appeared in court to plead guilty to 21 counts of indecency and four counts of gross indecency. His admission of guilt came as a shock to many, given his role as a martial arts instructor and the position of authority he held over his young students. The court heard that the offenses took place over a lengthy period, raising concerns about the safety and well-being of the children involved.
Following his guilty plea, McKeown was sentenced to a term of 34 months in prison, but the sentence was suspended for three years, meaning he will not serve time unless he commits another offense within that period. Additionally, he was ordered to register as a sex offender, a measure intended to monitor his activities and prevent further harm.
The presiding judge emphasized the gravity of the case, stating that McKeown had egregiously abused the trust placed in him by the children and their families. The betrayal of confidence was seen as particularly heinous given his role as a martial arts instructor, where discipline and respect are fundamental principles.
In the aftermath of the court proceedings, the families of the young girls expressed their feelings, stating that McKeown had “got off lightly” considering the severity of his actions. They also conveyed a sense of relief that their children were spared the ordeal of giving evidence in court, which can be a traumatic experience for young victims. The case has left a lasting impact on the community of Crumlin, prompting calls for increased vigilance and safeguarding measures to protect children from similar abuses in the future.
