ROBERT KNIGHT FROM COED EVA SENTENCED AFTER SEXUAL ASSAULT IN CWMBRAN
In a case that has drawn significant attention in the local community, Robert Knight, a 35-year-old man from Coed Eva, was formally sentenced for his involvement in a sexual assault incident that took place in Cwmbran. The incident, which occurred in 2009, involved Knight allegedly indecently touching a teenage girl, an accusation that has now led to legal consequences.During the proceedings at Newport Crown Court, it was revealed that Knight had previously admitted to the act of indecently touching the young girl. The court heard that police were promptly called to investigate the matter, leading to a thorough investigation that included DNA testing. The forensic analysis confirmed the presence of Knight’s saliva on the girl’s chest, a key piece of evidence that linked him directly to the incident.
Despite the mounting evidence, Knight initially denied the allegations during police interviews, claiming he had no knowledge of how his saliva could have been found on the girl. He maintained his innocence until the day his trial was scheduled to commence on April 6, when he unexpectedly pleaded guilty to the charges.
Prosecutor Sarah Waters highlighted that Knight’s criminal history includes a previous conviction for attempted rape in 2001, for which he received a prison sentence of three and a half years. This prior conviction added weight to the court’s considerations, emphasizing a pattern of concerning behavior.
Representing Knight, lawyer Andrew Davies, pointed out that the girl involved in this case had previously made false allegations of sexual assault against another individual, raising questions about her credibility. However, the judge, Eleri Rees, expressed serious concerns about Knight’s history of offending and his apparent lack of remorse.
Judge Rees described Knight as a man who exploited a vulnerable young woman, acting on his impulses without regard for the consequences. She emphasized the importance of community safety and the need for rehabilitation, especially given Knight’s ongoing status on the Sex Offenders Register for life, following his earlier conviction.
As a result, the court sentenced Robert Knight to a three-year community order. Additionally, he was mandated to participate in an intensive sex offenders’ rehabilitation program, aimed at addressing his behavior and preventing future offenses. The case underscores ongoing issues related to sexual offenses in the Cwmbran area and highlights the judicial system’s efforts to hold offenders accountable while emphasizing rehabilitation and community protection.
