ROBERT HODGSON OF STANLEY SENTENCED TO 23 YEARS FOR SEXUAL ABUSE OF YOUNG GIRLS IN COUNTY DURHAM

In a harrowing case that has shocked the community of Stanley in County Durham, Robert Hodgson, aged 66, has been sentenced to a lengthy prison term after being convicted of a series of heinous sexual offences involving two young girls. The court heard how Hodgson, a resident of Windermere Terrace in Stanley, subjected the victims to a prolonged campaign of abuse that began when they were as young as six years old.

The trial revealed that Hodgson's abuse was both systematic and manipulative. One of the victims, who was assaulted repeatedly over several years, was first targeted at the age of six. The abuse escalated over time, culminating in Hodgson raping her when she was just 11. The court was informed that Hodgson groomed her by showing her explicit pornographic videos and encouraging her to imitate what she saw. To maintain control and silence, he would give her money and sometimes beer, rewarding her for 'being good.' As she grew older, the frequency and severity of the abuse increased.

Judge Simon Hickey, presiding over the case, expressed his admiration for the bravery of the victims who testified. He remarked that Hodgson could have chosen to plead guilty, thereby sparing the girls the trauma of recounting their experiences in court. Instead, they showed remarkable courage and dignity in giving evidence, though it came at a significant emotional cost. The judge emphasized the profound impact of Hodgson’s actions, noting that the first victim had attempted suicide twice in her adult life and remains unable to form healthy, loving relationships.

The second victim’s case was also detailed during the proceedings. Hodgson had deliberately planned for her to be alone with him, subjecting her to multiple sexual assaults between the ages of six and 11. The court heard how he exploited her vulnerability, further demonstrating his predatory behavior.

Following his conviction on 16 counts of sexual offences, including rape, Hodgson was sentenced to 23 years in prison. Additionally, he was handed a two-year extension on licence upon release. The court also imposed a sexual harm prevention order and a restraining order to protect the victims and prevent Hodgson from contacting them in the future.

Judge Hickey concluded his remarks by condemning Hodgson’s actions and acknowledging the courage of the victims, stating that their bravery in recounting their ordeals was commendable despite the lasting scars they carry.
