KILSYTH MAN JAILED FOR RAPE OF 13-YEAR-OLD GIRL ON CHRISTMAS DAY
A man who raped and took indecent photos of a 13-year-old girl on Christmas Day has been jailed for eight and a half years.Robert Dougal, 62, from Kilsyth, engaged in sexual assault against the teenager, who cannot be named for legal reasons, after intoxicating her with alcohol at an address in North Lanarkshire on December 25, 2022.
The High Court in Edinburgh was told how Dougal, who kept indecent images of the girl on his phone, was caught after police investigations uncovered sufficient evidence to prosecute him.
The court heard that Dougal was convicted of rape and possessing indecent images earlier this year at the High Court in Stirling, despite pleading not guilty.
His sentencing was deferred pending a background report, and he appeared in court recently.
Judge Lady Ross highlighted the impact on the victim, noting her significant psychological injuries.
The judge described the case as requiring a 'substantial custodial sentence' and ordered Dougal to be placed on the sex offenders register for life.
The court also referenced admissions Dougal made about his actions and the heavy drinking and personal trauma he claimed to have endured, including the death of his wife.
Defense counsel Frances Connor stated that Dougal maintained his innocence and was dealing with personal trauma.
The case has garnered attention due to the severity of crimes committed by Dougal.
