ROBERT DAVIDSON FROM GOWKTHRAPPLE SENTENCED FOR CHILD SEX ABUSE IMAGES IN MOTHERWELL
In February 2021, a man identified as Robert Davidson was sentenced to a year in prison after being found in possession of an alarming collection of over 13,000 images depicting child sexual abuse. The case unfolded in Hamilton Sheriff Court, where Davidson, aged 49 and now residing at Birkshaw Brae in Gowkthrapple, admitted to the authorities that the extensive and disturbing collection of images was indeed his.Police officers, acting on information provided by a national agency, targeted Davidson’s residence in Motherwell, specifically at Kethers Lane, on March 16 of the previous year. The intelligence indicated that indecent images were being accessed from that address, prompting a search warrant to be executed. During the search, all individuals present in the house were cautioned by officers. Davidson, however, immediately acknowledged his involvement, stating, “Wait, wait. Look, it’s me. Ok?”
Among the items recovered was an iPad mini, which Davidson admitted belonged to him. The device was subsequently sent for forensic analysis, revealing a disturbing cache of images. The forensic report confirmed the presence of 334 images classified as Category A, representing the most severe and depraved forms of child exploitation. Additionally, there were 389 images in Category B, and a staggering 12,998 images categorized as Category C, indicating a wide spectrum of illegal material.
It was noted that Davidson had no prior criminal convictions, which was acknowledged during the proceedings. His defense attorney, Jackson Bateman, highlighted that Davidson’s actions might have been influenced by underlying mental health issues, alcohol abuse, and depression. Mr. Bateman emphasized that his client had pleaded guilty at an early stage and had not committed any further offenses since.
Despite these mitigating factors, the prosecution and the court agreed that a custodial sentence was necessary. Sheriff Douglas Brown expressed particular concern over the number of Category A images, emphasizing their serious and depraved nature. The sheriff stated, “Viewing and downloading indecent images is part of the process of child sex abuse. It creates demand for this material and encourages its use.”
He further explained that the sentence needed to reflect the gravity of the abuse depicted in the images. Over a period of 17 months, Davidson accessed and downloaded more than 13,000 indecent images of children, a fact that underscored the severity of the case. Although the original sentence was set at 16 months, Sheriff Brown reduced it due to Davidson’s guilty plea. Additionally, Davidson will be required to register as a sex offender for a period of 10 years, underscoring the long-term consequences of his actions.
