CHARLES ROBERTSON FROM GOWKTHRAPPLE SENTENCED FOR CHILD INDECENT IMAGES IN WISHAW AND NEWMAINS
In January 2020, a man from Gowkthrapple, Charles Robertson, was formally charged and subsequently sentenced for possessing indecent images of children, a crime that has garnered significant attention due to its disturbing nature.Robertson, aged 60 and residing on Birkshaw Brae, appeared before Hamilton Sheriff Court to face the charges stemming from his actions over a prolonged period.
It was revealed during the court proceedings that Robertson had been in possession of such material at his former residence on Crindledyke Crescent, Newmains.
The possession spanned approximately nine years, indicating a sustained period of illicit activity.
The case was brought to light after police conducted a search of Robertson’s flat in August of the previous year, during which they uncovered evidence of his involvement in this disturbing conduct.
Prosecutor Vish Kathuria detailed that a computer found in Robertson’s bedroom was subjected to forensic analysis.
The investigation uncovered 14 indecent photographs and six videos depicting children, which were stored on the device.
Further examination revealed a significant number of search terms associated with seeking out indecent images of minors, underscoring the deliberate nature of Robertson’s actions.
At the hearing, Robertson admitted to possessing the indecent material.
It was noted that he had no prior convictions, which may have influenced the court’s approach to sentencing.
The prosecution highlighted the seriousness of the offence, emphasizing the potential harm caused to victims and the importance of safeguarding children from exploitation.
In delivering the sentence, Sheriff Thomas Millar considered a report from criminal justice social work, which recommended close supervision of Robertson’s activities moving forward.
The sheriff agreed with this assessment and imposed a series of strict conditions.
These included restrictions on Robertson’s residence and internet usage, as well as a prohibition on having unsupervised contact with children under the age of 16.
Furthermore, Robertson was required to inform police if he planned to travel outside the local area or beyond the jurisdiction of the court, ensuring ongoing monitoring of his movements.
The court’s decision reflects a firm stance on protecting vulnerable minors and underscores the gravity of possessing and seeking out child exploitation material.
