ROBERT COELLO'S TRAGIC END IN WHITLEY JAIL: HORRIFIC ATTACK LEADS TO HIS DEATH
In a disturbing turn of events, Robert Coello, a man previously convicted of heinous child sex offenses, met a violent end within the confines of his prison cell. Coello, aged 44 and a resident of Whitley’s Staverton Road at the time of his crimes, was found battered and severely injured in his cell, prompting an urgent response from prison medical staff. Despite their efforts to save him, Coello succumbed to his injuries after more than seven hours of intensive medical intervention.Coello’s criminal history is marked by his conviction in August 2006, when he was sentenced to life imprisonment for multiple sexual offenses against a schoolgirl. He pleaded guilty to four counts of rape and twelve additional sexual assaults, though he denied three other rape charges that were kept on file. His crimes, committed during his time working as a bus driver for Reading Buses, were described by Judge Zoe Smith at Reading Crown Court as among the “worst of their kind.” The judge ordered that Coello serve a minimum of seven years before being eligible for parole.
Following his sentencing, Coello served time in various correctional facilities. Six months prior to his death, he was transferred to Grendon Underwood, a category B psychiatric prison. On the afternoon of Sunday, the 3:30 pm incident, Coello was found in pools of blood with significant head injuries in his cell on G-wing. Reports indicate that the injuries were consistent with being stamped on, suggesting a brutal assault by another inmate or inmates.
He was immediately transported to Stoke Mandeville Hospital, where medical staff fought to save his life. Unfortunately, Coello was declared dead at 11:05 pm that same evening. His death marked a tragic and violent end for a man whose crimes had already cast a long shadow over the community of Whitley.
In a related development, the criminal justice system further underscored the severity of Coello’s case when, in November 2011, another inmate was convicted of his murder. Lee Robert Foye, aged 26, was found guilty at Luton Crown Court of killing Coello while both were incarcerated at HMP Grendon in Buckinghamshire. Foye received a new life sentence with a minimum tariff of 31 years, emphasizing the gravity of the assault and the ongoing dangers faced by high-profile offenders within the prison system.
