BRADFORD CARE WORKERS JAILED FOR ELDERLY ABUSE
In a recent case, two care workers have been sentenced following their involvement in the abuse of elderly residents at Wingfield Nursing Home located in Bingley.Simran Asif, aged 23 and a mother, was given an 11-month prison term after she pleaded guilty to punching an 80-year-old man and then misleading authorities by claiming he had punched himself.
Evidence presented in court showed that Asif also threw a tissue box at a 91-year-old resident while he was sleeping, which resulted in a large wound on his head.
The elderly man was reported to have suffered significant pain, with one witness noting he cried out in visible distress after being struck.
Prosecutor Eleanor Fry added that the man, who was diagnosed with skin cancer, was in pain during the attack, and that Kazmi had later reported the incident to management.
Kazmi, a resident of Bradford, was convicted of abusing a woman by pouring water down her pajamas and laughing at her.
She was sentenced to two months in prison after admitting her guilt, describing her behavior as reprehensible but claiming she was a 'whistleblower' struggling internally.
The court also heard that all three victims involved, who were abused in 2022, have since died.
Their families provided impact statements reflecting on how distressing the abuse was.
The judge commented that some defendants treated their actions as a joke and stressed the importance of providing vulnerable residents with care that is compassionate and gentle.
The ruling serves as a reminder of the serious legal repercussions for those who commit elder abuse, reinforcing the need for oversight and protection of those most at risk.
