RICHARD CURRY, POLICE OFFICER FROM HAYES, SENTENCED FOR CHILD PORNOGRAPHY

In July 2003, Sergeant Richard Curry, a police officer based in Hayes, was sentenced to six months in prison after admitting to downloading and possessing over 1,300 vile images of children as young as seven engaged in sexual activities.

Despite being recognized for bravery and his contributions to anti-paedophile efforts, Curry’s actions led to his downfall.

Court proceedings at Southwark Crown Court revealed that Curry had not only downloaded these disturbing images but also printed them out on A4 paper, which he then stored in a drawer and wardrobe at his home on Golden Crescent.

Judge Peter Fingret addressed Curry during sentencing, stating, "In the exhibits produced to me, there are a number of images printed by you of penetrative sexual activity between children and adults – and they are quite horrific." The judge further remarked, "In your occupation, you must have been aware of the risks you were taking." Curry’s career achievements included receiving a Quality Service Report for assisting American law enforcement in their worldwide efforts to combat paedophilia.

However, he was identified and caught after US authorities shared his details with Scotland Yard’s Paedophile Unit.

Prosecutor Katrina Charles explained that upon police arrival at Curry’s residence, he immediately confessed and led officers to his bedroom, where he had concealed the illicit material.

A search of his computer uncovered more illegal images on the hard drive, totaling 1,312 pictures.

It was revealed that Curry, who worked at Hammersmith Police Station, had actively searched for child pornography online and maintained a monthly subscription costing thirty dollars to a website called Lolita World.

His defense advocate, Louise McCulloch, highlighted his previously exemplary record, noting his bravery during a siege, his role in riot control in 1999, and his efforts to save a woman attempting suicide.

She expressed regret over his current situation, stating, "It is both tragic and puzzling for a man who has so much to give to be before the court on a matter such as this.

He is now a ruined man." As part of his punishment, Curry was ordered to register as a sex offender for a period of seven years.
