RICHARD CARLYLE'S SHOCKING CHILD PORN CASE IN BIRMINGHAM AND EVESHAM

In December 2001, a disturbing case involving Richard Carlyle, a former prison officer, came to light in the towns of Birmingham and Evesham. Carlyle, aged 37 and now residing in Birmingham, was found to be in possession of indecent images of children within his home in Evesham. The police investigation was initiated after a tip-off led to a search of his residence, revealing the troubling material.

During the proceedings at Droitwich Magistrates' Court, Carlyle pleaded guilty to multiple charges, including two counts of possessing indecent pictures of children and three counts of taking such images. As a result of his guilty plea, he was sentenced to a three-year community rehabilitation order. Additionally, he was placed on the sex offenders' register for a period of five years, which entails strict monitoring and registration requirements.

Furthermore, Carlyle was prohibited from working with children under the age of 18 and was barred from having any one-on-one contact with minors. Parts of his computer equipment were confiscated as part of the investigation, and he was ordered to pay costs amounting to £118. The court's actions reflect the seriousness of the offenses and the need to protect vulnerable minors from potential harm.

Prosecutor Edward Soulsby stated that Carlyle initially admitted to taking the pictures during his first police interview. However, Carlyle claimed that his actions were related to his previous employment as a prison officer at Long Lartin, where he worked with sex offenders. He argued that he was downloading the images for research purposes, asserting that it was part of his professional duties.

Mr. Soulsby clarified that subsequent checks by officers revealed that Carlyle had no involvement in any such research program, and the claim was unfounded. The court was informed that no evidence supported Carlyle's assertion, and the images found were not connected to any legitimate research activity.

Defense lawyer Judith Kenney expressed her client's remorse, describing the situation as a tragic loss given his prior good reputation. She emphasized that Carlyle had held a significant position working with serious offenders and that this incident had profoundly impacted his life. Kenney described the case as a tremendous blow to Carlyle, highlighting the personal and professional devastation caused by these allegations and convictions.
