RICHARD BRISTOW FROM DUDLEY SENTENCED FOR SEXUAL ABUSE OF YOUNG GIRLS AT EARLS GYMNASTICS CLUB

In June 1999, a disturbing case involving a former gymnastics coach from Dudley came to a conclusion as Richard Bristow, aged 54, was sentenced to three years in prison for sexually abusing young girls under his tutelage. The sentencing took place at Wolverhampton Crown Court, where the judge emphasized the manipulative tactics Bristow employed to conceal his misconduct.

Judge described Bristow as a man who exploited the trust and affection of his victims to prevent their disclosures, highlighting the betrayal of a position of authority and responsibility. Bristow, who was married and fathered two daughters, had been employed by Dudley Council as a senior instructor and coach. His career in gymnastics spanned over a decade, during which he held prominent roles, including head coach at the Earls School of Gymnastics, starting in 1990, and coaching at other local clubs such as Kingswinford and Wall Heath Gymnastics.

He was charged with multiple counts of indecent assault, specifically four convictions out of eight charges, with the court clearing him of the remaining four. The allegations covered a period of ten years, from January 1986 to June 1997, during which he was accused of abusing six girls aged between six and twelve years old. Bristow consistently denied all allegations, maintaining his innocence throughout the trial.

The case was brought to light after a former gymnast, who was only eight years old at the time of one incident, recounted her experience. She described how Bristow encouraged her to perform an exercise while naked during a one-on-one training session. Following this, he wrapped her in a hospital blanket and then committed an indecent assault, as revealed during the court proceedings. The jury also heard testimonies indicating that girls frequently undressed in front of Bristow and swam naked at an indoor pool, behaviors that contributed to the case's disturbing nature.

The revelations only surfaced when one victim, now 19, sought counseling following her parents' separation. Her counselor reported her disclosures to social services, prompting an investigation by police. Detective Inspector Mulligan explained that numerous girls had been interviewed about Bristow's conduct. Although some cases were not pursued initially due to victims' reluctance to testify, the conviction of Bristow has encouraged others to reconsider their willingness to come forward and potentially reopen investigations into their experiences.
