MAN JAILED FOR ASSAULT AND RAPE FOLLOWING VICIOUS ATTACK IN FLINTSHIRE
A man who "viciously" assaulted a woman and then raped her has been sentenced to more than eight years in prison.The victim attempted to escape through a bathroom window but was "hauled back" inside by Reece Wynne.
The 28-year-old, residing on Greenbank Lane, Soughton, admitted to carrying out the brutal attack in Flintshire during the current year.
During the court proceedings, it was revealed that the victim and Wynne were at a property and were both drinking.
The victim, who cannot be named, described how things initially started well but deteriorated as Wynne became "excessively intoxicated," leading to him hitting and beating her.
She sent her mother a message requesting £20 to pay for a taxi, and later left a voicemail expressing her distress.
Wynne assaulted the woman by slapping, kicking, and stamping on her, resulting in serious facial injuries.
The court heard that the victim tried to escape out of a window but Wynne dragged her back inside and raped her.
The following morning, she told her mother via WhatsApp that Wynne had "raped me and leathered me," including sending a photograph of her bloodied face.
Her brother was alerted and contacted the police, who arrived at 7:40 am.
She was described as hysterical and crying, and was taken for medical treatment at Ysbyty Glan Clwyd.
Wynne was arrested and taken to Llay Police Station.
Prosecutor Gareth Bellis stated Wynne had called the victim a "slag" and a "whore," and had slapped her multiple times while they sat on a sofa before further attacking and raping her.
The woman, in her statement, expressed that her life has been forever changed, now experiencing overwhelming anxiety and a fear that she thought she was going to die.
Wynne’s defense, represented by Philip Tully, expressed remorse, claiming Wynne wished to apologize and that his violent behavior was a "one-off" incident.
The judge, Her Honour Nicola Jones, acknowledged Wynne's diagnosis of a mental disorder and his history of traumatic experiences in his youth, including the murder of a friend when Wynne was a teenager.
Nevertheless, she emphasized that the severity of the offense warranted a significant sentence, thus sentencing Wynne to eight years and one month for rape.
Wynne is set to serve two-thirds of that term, with an additional three years for assault causing actual bodily harm, to run concurrently.
Furthermore, an indefinite restraining order was imposed to prevent contact with the victim.
Wynne also pleaded guilty to failing to comply with notifications required under the sex offender register and received a three-month concurrent sentence for this.
After sentencing, North Wales Police Detective Constable Jessica Rowley commended the victim’s bravery, reaffirming their commitment to justice for sex offenders and encouraging victims to report sexual crimes, offering support and reassurance.
Wynne's conviction stems from the police investigation following the assault, which included the victim’s distressing messages and injuries documented during treatment.
The case highlights the ongoing efforts of law enforcement to address violent sexual crimes, emphasizing support for victims and appropriate sentencing based on the gravity of their experiences.
