REBECCA KENNEDY FROM WELWYN GARDEN CITY ESCAPES JAIL AFTER SEXUAL INCIDENT WITH TEEN BOYS
In a case that has shocked the community of Welwyn Garden City, Rebecca Kennedy, a 26-year-old woman, narrowly avoided imprisonment after being involved in a series of disturbing incidents involving two underage boys. The events unfolded on May 9 of the previous year, when Kennedy was found in an alleyway behind The Chieftain public house on Cole Green Lane, engaging in drunken sexual activity with her then-partner, Graham Harrison, aged 44.According to reports, the two boys, aged 14 and 15 at the time, stumbled upon the scene and witnessed Kennedy on the ground with Harrison. The boys recounted that upon noticing their presence, Kennedy quickly got up and began to masturbate in front of them, making crude and inappropriate remarks. The incident was reported to the police, leading to Kennedy and Harrison's subsequent arrest.
During the trial at St Albans Crown Court, Kennedy, who resides on Broadwater Crescent in Welwyn Garden City, faced serious charges. She was convicted of two counts of engaging in sexual activity in the presence of a child and one count of assault. The court heard that Kennedy had leant against a wall, slapped her own bottom, and expressed her desire for sex in front of the boys. One of the boys testified that Kennedy approached him, crouched with her trousers around her ankles, and rubbed herself against the front wheel of his BMX bicycle.
Further disturbing details emerged during the proceedings. The boys described how Kennedy had pushed one of them against a wall with her hands around his neck, telling him, “You’ve had to learn the hard way.” The police later found her knickers in her shoe at Hatfield police station, where she was so intoxicated that officers could not interview her until the following day. Kennedy admitted to meeting Harrison to retrieve some of her belongings and claimed she was changing her top because she was hot when the boys approached her. She described the boys as being inappropriate and cheeky, mocking her stretch marks and shouting obscene remarks.
Kennedy maintained that she and Harrison were not engaged in sexual activity at the time and falsely claimed her underwear had fallen into her shoe while she was changing at the police station. Her defense also highlighted her struggles with alcohol, which the court acknowledged as a factor but did not excuse her behavior. The judge, Michael Baker QC, sentenced Kennedy to an 18-month ban from licensed premises, a five-month night-time curfew, and ordered her to attend an alcohol rehabilitation program. Additionally, she was placed on the Sex Offenders’ Register for five years.
Judge Baker condemned her actions, stating, “You behaved lewdly, abusively, and aggressively towards them. You showed your nakedness, masturbated, or pretended to do so, and assaulted the younger one. The only explanation was that you were drunk, but that is no excuse. You are devoid of remorse or even shame.” The case has raised concerns about the safety and well-being of minors in the Welwyn Garden City area, prompting calls for increased vigilance and community support to prevent such incidents in the future.
