REBECCA EDWARDS OF CENARTH SENTENCED FOR HORSE CRUELTY IN NEWCASTLE EMYNL

Rebecca Edwards, born around 1988 and residing at Tanybanc in Cenarth, Newcastle Emlyn, has been convicted of multiple charges related to the neglect and cruelty towards fourteen horses. The case, which drew significant attention from animal welfare advocates, centered on the suffering inflicted upon these animals kept in a field located in the Sawmills area of Cenarth.

Edwards had initially pleaded not guilty to five separate charges, each accusing her of causing unnecessary suffering to the horses. The trial took place at Haverfordwest Magistrates’ Court on the 28th of May, 2024. During the proceedings, evidence was presented that demonstrated the extent of neglect and poor treatment the horses endured under her care.

It was established that Edwards was responsible for causing unnecessary pain and distress to the animals between February 24 and March 24, 2023. The court found her guilty of these charges, which included neglecting the horses’ basic needs and failing to provide proper care. Specifically, she was charged with three counts of neglect related to the poor physical condition of three of the horses, which exhibited severe health issues such as a fractured pelvis, infected ulcerated wounds, and dental disease. Of these three charges, she was convicted on one, while the other two were dismissed.

Further allegations against Edwards involved her failure to ensure the horses received adequate nutrition, proper veterinary care, and appropriate environmental conditions. The court also found her guilty of neglecting to arrange for farrier services, dental treatments, and veterinary interventions when necessary, as well as neglecting to implement preventative measures against lice infestations.

In sentencing, Edwards received a custodial term of 16 weeks in prison, which was suspended for 18 months. Additionally, she was ordered to pay costs amounting to £800 and a surcharge of £154. As part of her punishment, she was banned from owning or keeping horses for a period of ten years, a measure aimed at preventing future neglect and ensuring the welfare of animals in her care in the future.
