2015: LYE MAN RAYMOND SINCLAIR JAILED AFTER GLASS ATTACK IN LEFT LOWER GORNAL VICTIM MARYANNE SMITH IN FEAR FOR HER LIFE

A WOMAN lost one-and-a-half litres of blood after a savage attack by her former boyfriend which left her fearing for her life.

Maryanne Smith spent five days in hospital after Raymond Sinclair threw a pint glass that smashed in her face.

Sinclair was jailed for two years after Judge Michael Challinor told him was clear his victim was convinced she was going to die at her Lower Gornal home.

He told Sinclair she bled profusely when she was hit by the flying glass and she had to have a number of blood transfusions.

At Wolverhampton Crown Court, the judge added: “It is evident her life was put at risk, this attack has had a devastating effect on her.

She has flashbacks, she is agitated and such was the trauma that she has had to leave her home.

She thought she was going to die.” Sinclair, aged 44, had been in a three month “casual” relationship with Miss Smith, who lived in Lake Street, but he suspected she was seeing someone else.

She maintained she had no interest in forming a long-term relationship and after telling her, “This Is what I am going to do,” Sinclair threw the glass.

Peter Grice, prosecuting, said the glass shattered on impact leaving her with a cut to the left temple an artery was severed by the glass and there was a “great deal of blood.” He added her screams for help were heard by neighbours who alerted police and Sinclair was arrested.

Miss Smith was rushed to hospital by paramedics where she had blood transfusions and in a victim impact statement she later told police she felt her life had been ruined by the incident.

Sinclair, of Jackson Street, Lye, admitted wounding and the judge ruled he had to pass a sentence that would not only punish but act as a deterrent.

Gurdeep Garcha, for Sinclair, said his client had been embarrassed by the extent of the injury he had caused to his girlfriend adding: “He is not a man who has a habit of committing offences against his partners.

He recognises he has done wrong.

He knows what he did could have had catastrophic consequences and that he could have taken her eye out.

He threw the glass in temper during an argument.

He happened on the spur of the moment.

He had the glass, an argument developed and he threw it.”
