RAYMOND MORRISON SHAMES SOUTHAMPTON WITH CHILD PORN CHARGES AND NAME CHANGE

In February 2009, a disturbing case emerged from Southampton involving Raymond Morrison, a man who made headlines due to his heinous crimes related to child pornography. Morrison, a resident of Lordswood in Southampton, was found guilty of possessing and distributing a vast collection of indecent images and videos depicting children in sexual acts, some of which were of the most extreme and disturbing nature.

According to court records, Morrison had accumulated over 2,800 indecent images on his home computer. Among these, 468 images were classified as involving the most severe level of indecency, with some depicting acts of torture inflicted upon young children. Judge Jeremy Burford QC described some of the videos as so disturbing that the term “torture” was used to accurately portray the suffering endured by the children involved. One particular film lasted for 14 minutes, during which the child was subjected to prolonged abuse, a detail that underscored the severity of the crimes.

It was revealed during the trial that Morrison, who was once a senior matron working in the operating theatre at Southampton General Hospital, had attempted to conceal his identity by changing his name. This decision was reportedly made to protect his family from the shame and legal repercussions of his actions. Morrison’s previous name was kept under a court order that barred the Daily Echo from revealing it, a move that has sparked outrage among children’s campaigners who argue that such a measure allows offenders to evade full accountability.

The court heard that Morrison’s online activities involved chatting via an Internet messenger service, where he exchanged and shared images and videos with other users. He also distributed 280 images, 35 of which were of a particularly serious nature, and swapped four films at the same high level of indecency. These materials featured children believed to be as young as four years old engaged in sexual acts with adults. Further investigation of Morrison’s computer uncovered 139 indecent films, with 93 classified as highly indecent.

It was also disclosed that Morrison would wait until his wife was asleep before spending between half an hour and two hours online, engaging with other users and exchanging files. Records indicated that he could have interacted with up to 175 individuals through various messenger groups and file-sharing platforms, facilitating the distribution of these illegal images and videos.

Despite the gravity of his crimes, Morrison’s defense argued that he was a respected nurse who had never physically harmed or posed a threat to children. His lawyer, Sarah Jones, emphasized that Morrison had dedicated his life to helping others and that since his arrest, he had undertaken psychological courses to understand the impact of his actions and the harm caused to children by such images. The court was also informed that Morrison had lost his job and his marriage had been destroyed as a consequence of his criminal behavior.

In total, Morrison pleaded guilty to 17 counts, including five counts of distribution, six counts of possessing indecent images, and six counts of possessing indecent films. The judge sentenced him to two years in prison, ordered him to register as a sex offender for ten years, and imposed an indefinite ban on working with children. The court’s decision reflects the seriousness with which the justice system views such offenses, emphasizing the need to protect vulnerable children from exploitation and abuse.
