RAYMOND BLAYLOCK JAILED FOR CHILD SEX ABUSE IN COCKERMOUTH
In a case that has shocked the community of Cockermouth, Raymond Alan Blaylock, a 59-year-old man from Main Street, was sentenced to four years in prison for the heinous sexual abuse of young children. The court proceedings revealed the disturbing details of his crimes, which have left lasting scars on his victims.Blaylock pleaded guilty at Carlisle Crown Court to a total of 12 charges of indecency, all involving children of primary school age. His admission of guilt came after a lengthy investigation into allegations that spanned several years. The court heard that his actions were not only morally reprehensible but also physically painful for the children involved, causing them significant psychological trauma.
Judge Barbara Forrester, presiding over the case, described Blaylock’s conduct as having “corrupted their lives entirely.” She emphasized the severity of his abuse, noting that the victims, now adults living in various parts of the country, continue to suffer from the long-term psychological effects of his actions. The judge pointed out that the repeated molestations inflicted upon these children had profound and enduring consequences.
During her sentencing remarks, Judge Forrester stated, “Not only was it terrifying and distressing for them at the time, but there have been long-term consequences which have affected their lives and their relationships since. One can only hope that by their courage in coming forward now, they can at last move on and, if they feel it is appropriate, receive help for what they went through as children.”
The court also heard that one of the children had initially tried to report the abuse to an adult, but their concerns were ignored. It was only in February of the previous year that one victim finally disclosed the abuse to the police. Following this revelation, authorities traced other victims, who then confirmed that Blaylock had committed similar acts against them as well.
Given that the offences occurred many years ago, the maximum sentence Blaylock could face was limited to two years per offence, as per the laws in place at the time. Had the crimes been committed more recently, he could have faced up to ten years for each charge, since the maximum penalty was increased by legislation in 1997.
Judge Forrester reflected on the changing societal attitudes towards child abuse, stating, “Years ago, the culture regarding sexual abuse was very different from what it is today, and the majority of the public did not believe that child abuse happened on the level at which we now know it did.” She concluded by condemning Blaylock’s actions and underscoring the importance of justice for his victims.
