SITTINGBOURNE PENSIONER RAYMOND BAREHAM SENTENCED TO 18.5 YEARS FOR ABUSE OF TEENAGER
In a case that has shocked the community of Sittingbourne, a 76-year-old man named Raymond Bareham has been sentenced to an extensive prison term of 18 and a half years after being convicted of multiple serious sexual offenses against a young teenage girl. The horrific abuse took place over a span of five years, beginning in 2017 and continuing until 2022. The victim, whose identity remains protected, was subjected to repeated acts of sexual assault and exploitation by Bareham, who targeted her during a particularly vulnerable period in her life. The court heard that Bareham exploited her grief following a family tragedy, recognizing her emotional distress and using it to manipulate and control her.
According to the evidence presented at Maidstone Crown Court, Bareham, who resides on Prince Charles Avenue in Sittingbourne, deliberately isolated the girl from her friends and family, further deepening her vulnerability. He engaged in grooming behaviors, which included regularly purchasing alcohol for her despite her being underage, and insisting she consume it. He also showered her with gifts and treats, creating a false sense of affection and trust.
During the trial, it was revealed that Bareham falsely claimed to the girl that they were in a romantic relationship. He became possessive and angry if she did not comply with his demands, and he even told her that the person she was grieving would approve of their relationship, further manipulating her emotional state.
The initial assault occurred in 2017 when Bareham lured the girl to a nearby orchard, where he committed the first act of abuse. Over the following years, the abuse persisted, with the girl enduring ongoing trauma until she finally found the courage to report her ordeal to the authorities.
After her report, Bareham attempted to obstruct justice by driving her to a police station in a bid to persuade her to withdraw her statement. This act was part of a broader pattern of attempts to evade accountability for his actions.
Following a thorough investigation, law enforcement officials arrested Bareham and charged him with multiple serious offenses. The charges included three counts of rape, four counts of sexual assault, one count of causing or inciting sexual activity with a child, one count of sexual assault by penetration, and one count of perverting the course of justice.
Despite his denial of the charges, the jury at Maidstone Crown Court found Bareham guilty on all counts after a trial. The court's decision reflects the gravity of his crimes and the impact on the victim. The lengthy sentence handed down underscores the severity with which the justice system views such offenses, especially those involving vulnerable minors.
