RANWINDER CHAWLA, STAINES TEACHER, JAILED FOR SEX OFFENCES AGAINST SCHOOLGIRLS IN GUILDFORD

In a case that has sent shockwaves through the community of Staines and the surrounding areas, Ranwinder Chawla, a former teacher residing at Chestnut Manor Close in Staines, has been sentenced to six years in prison for a series of serious sexual offences involving underage girls. The crimes, which took place over a span of years, include grooming, indecent assault, and engaging in sexual activity with minors while in a position of trust.

Chawla, aged 48, was found guilty in June by a jury composed of six men and six women at Guildford Crown Court. The jury convicted him on four counts of indecent assault and four counts of sexual activity with a female under 18, crimes committed while he was serving as a science and drama teacher. He was acquitted of one additional count of indecent assault and one count of sexual activity with a minor under 18, but the remaining charges resulted in a conviction that has now led to his imprisonment.

The court heard that Chawla had established a close and manipulative relationship with a 15-year-old girl, who cannot be named for legal reasons. It was revealed that he used his position and influence to groom her, gradually manipulating her into a sexual relationship. The grooming process was described as calculated and deliberate, with Chawla exploiting her vulnerability to satisfy his own desires.

Furthermore, Chawla was found to have groomed another schoolgirl when she was just 14 years old, leading to her being indecently assaulted. The evidence presented during the trial painted a disturbing picture of a man who took advantage of young, impressionable victims under the guise of a trusted authority figure.

During the sentencing hearing, Crown prosecutor Ruby Selva emphasized that Chawla’s actions demonstrated a significant level of planning and premeditation. She pointed out that he had identified the vulnerabilities of both victims and used his grooming tactics to establish control over them, turning their trust into a tool for his own gratification.

Judge Lawrence West QC addressed the court, condemning Chawla’s behavior and highlighting the impact on the victims. He stated that Chawla had gained a reputation as a supportive figure—a “shoulder to cry on”—but instead of offering comfort, he exploited their trust for his own sexual pursuits. The judge noted that the evidence showed Chawla was grooming the girls to accept his advances, and in one case, the victim became uncomfortable and stopped progressing further.

Recorder West described Chawla’s conduct as exhibiting a “worrying pattern of behavior” and warned that if he were to remain in a position of trust, he would pose a serious risk to other young children. The court acknowledged the emotional toll on the victims, stating that their lives had been significantly affected by his actions.

As part of his sentence, Chawla was ordered to serve half of his six-year term in custody. Upon his release, which is expected in 2019, he will be placed on license and will be subject to an indefinite sex offenders’ register. Additionally, he has been banned from engaging in any voluntary or paid work involving children, reflecting the court’s concern over his potential to reoffend.
