RALPH HARPER OF NEWHAM CAUGHT WITH CHILD SEX ABUSE VIDEOS AT GREAT ORMOND STREET AND ST MARY'S HOSPITALS

In a disturbing case that has shocked the local community, Ralph Harper, a former medical professional based in Newham, was found to possess a large collection of videos depicting the sexual abuse of underage children. The investigation was triggered when police raided Harper’s residence in November, uncovering a disturbing trove of illicit material on his laptop. The footage included recordings of children as young as eight years old being subjected to sexual assault, with the majority classified as “category A,” indicating the most severe level of abuse.

Harper, who resided in Stratford, Newham, had a career in pediatrics, working as a junior doctor at Great Ormond Street Hospital from September 2016 until March 2017. Following his tenure there, he transitioned to a role within the neonatal department at St Mary’s Hospital. At the time of his arrest, he was employed at the UCL Great Ormond Street Institute of Child Health, a prominent research and medical institution dedicated to child health.

During the sentencing hearing at Snaresbrook Crown Court, Judge John Lafferty expressed grave concern over Harper’s career choices, emphasizing the troubling nature of his actions. The judge remarked, “It is particularly worrying that Harper sought a career in children’s medicine. These images can only be created through the abuse of children. From your medical background, you would understand better than most the trauma inflicted on young victims. The fact that you were pursuing a career in paediatrics makes this case even more disturbing.”

Representatives from Great Ormond Street Hospital issued a statement asserting that Harper had “passed all necessary pre-employment checks” and that no complaints had been made against him during his time there. Similarly, a spokesperson for UCL confirmed that Harper’s background had been thoroughly vetted before his appointment at the Institute of Child Health, and that he was dismissed immediately following his arrest.

It was also revealed during court proceedings that Harper is receiving support from the Lucy Faithfull Foundation, a charity dedicated to preventing child sexual abuse. Notably, Harper has no prior criminal convictions.

In sentencing, Harper received an eight-month prison sentence, suspended for 16 months. He was also ordered to complete 150 hours of community service, pay fines and costs totaling £690, and undergo 60 days of rehabilitation. Additionally, he is required to register as a sex offender for the next ten years after admitting to three counts of downloading indecent images of children, which included 21 videos classified as “category A,” nine as “category B,” and six as “category C.”
