JAIL FOR MUM-OF-THREE WHO 'CORRUPTED' UNDERAGE TEENAGER WITH SEX
Rachel Geraghty, a 41-year-old mother of three residing in Allenton, Derby, has been handed down a three-year prison sentence following her conviction on serious charges of sexual activity with a minor.The court heard that Geraghty engaged in sexual encounters with a teenage boy when he was just 13 or 14 years old, with the incidents taking place in her home.
The disturbing behaviour began with Geraghty inviting the young boy into her bedroom under the pretence of watching a film together.
During this encounter, she took the opportunity to begin physically touching him, running her fingers up and down his neck before starting to massage him in a sexual manner.
The situation escalated as she instructed the boy to “get on top” of her and methodically manipulated him into having sex.
During the act, Geraghty positioned herself in such a way that she was able to have sex with the minor, despite his evident discomfort and lack of understanding.
According to the court proceedings, Geraghty’s actions were deliberate and manipulative.
Judge Robert Egbuna remarked on her conduct, stating, “You manoeuvred him in between your legs and had sex with him.
He says he felt like he had to do it but he was a child and you were an adult.” The judge also noted that during the sexual activity, Geraghty placed her breasts in the teenage boy’s face, further emphasising her corrupting influence.
Throughout the ordeal, the victim has expressed feelings of being inadequately informed and exploited, which the court acknowledged as evidence of her abuse of power.
Furthermore, it was revealed that after the initial encounter, Geraghty told the boy not to disclose what had happened.
Nonetheless, two weeks later, she invited him back to her home for tea.
On this subsequent visit, they again engaged in sexual activity on her sofa.
During this second incident, an upsetting event occurred when Geraghty’s four-year-old son unexpectedly entered the room.
Although there was no suggestion that the child saw any inappropriate conduct, this intrusion caused the teenage victim to hurriedly pull up his trousers, adding a traumatic element to the episode.
The prosecution, led by Sarah Phelan, outlined that both incidents took place when the victim was between 13 and 14 years old, and Geraghty was in her twenties at the time.
The case was brought to light after the victim confided in his mother, which prompted her to report the matter.
Geraghty had also admitted the allegations to a social worker, who instructed her to contact the police.
She was arrested on May 7 of the previous year.
During police interviews, Geraghty attempted to shift blame onto the victim, claiming that he had largely been the one to “instigate” the encounters.
As for the impact on the victim, a statement read out in court disclosed that the incident had profound emotional and psychological effects.
The boy reported experiencing difficulties in forming relationships and developing mental health issues, including the need to attend anger management classes.
It was also noted that he had developed a sense of resentment toward women, an outcome attributed to the abuse.
In her defence, Amber Walker, representing Geraghty, explained that her client’s guilty plea spared the victim the ordeal of testifying in court.
She emphasised that Geraghty had been going through a challenging period in her life, having recently separated from a verbally abusive relationship.
Despite these mitigating circumstances, Judge Egbuna explained the severity of her actions, stating, “Children are meant to be protected, he was a child and he was vulnerable and you were an adult.” Geraghty, who had no prior criminal record, was also sentenced to be placed on the Sex Offenders' Register for ten years and was issued a 10-year Sexual Harm Prevention Order.
The court was attended by her family and supporters, as well as the victim’s mother and siblings, underscoring the seriousness of the case and its repercussions on multiple lives.
