PHILIP GREGORY FROM ABERGYNOLWYN SENTENCED TO 19 YEARS FOR RAPE AND SEX OFFENCES IN GWYNEDD
In a case that has shocked the community of Abergynolwyn and the wider Gwynedd region, Philip Gregory, a man with a troubling history, has been sentenced to a lengthy prison term of 19 years after being convicted of multiple serious sexual offences. The conviction follows a detailed trial at Mold Crown Court, where Gregory, aged 67, was found guilty of 14 separate charges involving five different victims.Prosecutor Elen Owen described Gregory as a “dangerous and predatory” individual who had systematically exploited children and young adults over a period approaching three decades. Despite the gravity of the allegations, Gregory maintained his innocence throughout the proceedings. The court heard that Gregory’s criminal activities spanned many years, during which he targeted vulnerable individuals, often exploiting his perceived good standing in the community to evade suspicion.
Judge Timothy Petts, presiding over the case, emphasized the severity of Gregory’s actions and the danger he posed to society. Addressing Gregory directly, the judge stated, “You are a dangerous and predatory offender who evaded justice for many years.” The court’s verdict was based on the jury’s unanimous decision, which confirmed Gregory’s guilt on all counts.
Gregory’s background included employment at a holiday complex and ownership of a bed and breakfast establishment. He also served as a special constable in North Wales at one point, a role that the judge noted was particularly troubling. Judge Petts remarked that Gregory’s position as a special constable, combined with his reputation for good character, had contributed to victims feeling hesitant to come forward, fearing they would not be believed due to his standing in the community.
The court heard disturbing details of Gregory’s offences, including an incident where he raped a terrified woman in a toilet while staying at a caravan site. The prosecution presented victim impact statements during the sentencing hearing, with one woman describing the abuse as having a “profound and everlasting” effect on her life. She expressed her feelings of hatred towards Gregory, making it clear that the trauma inflicted by his actions continues to haunt her.
As the court delivered its sentence, the seriousness of Gregory’s crimes was underscored, and the community was reminded of the importance of justice for victims of sexual abuse. Gregory’s case serves as a stark warning about the dangers posed by individuals who exploit their positions and manipulate trust for their own predatory purposes.
