PETER MILAM HORSHAM CHILD PORNOGRAPHY CASE SHOCKS COMMUNITY
In a case that has sent shockwaves through the town of Horsham, Peter Milam, a former employee of the local council, was sentenced to nine months in prison after being found guilty of possessing and viewing child pornography. The disturbing discovery was made during a police raid on his residence in Broome Close, Horsham, West Sussex, as well as at his parents' home located in Ridgehurst Drive, Horsham.Authorities uncovered a collection of explicit images depicting children as young as five years old on computers at both locations. The investigation was initiated when Sussex police executed a search warrant on December 23, 2002, uncovering the illicit material stored on Milam’s devices. It was revealed during the court proceedings that Milam had been viewing these images while his father was suffering from terminal cancer, adding a tragic and disturbing context to the case.
At Lewes Crown Court, Milam, aged 37, pleaded guilty to 10 counts of making indecent images of a child. Additionally, he admitted to 155 other similar offences, which the court took into account during sentencing. As part of his punishment, Milam was placed on the Sex Offenders’ Register for a period of ten years, reflecting the severity of his crimes.
The court heard that Milam was employed by Horsham District Council at the time of his arrest. His defense attorney, John Manning, argued that the consequences of Milam’s actions had been devastating, leading to the loss of his friends, his employment, and his home. Despite his lack of previous convictions, the judge, Charles Kemp, did not hold back in condemning Milam’s actions.
Judge Kemp described Milam’s behavior as perpetuating a “disgusting form of entertainment,” emphasizing the heinous nature of his crimes and the impact they have on victims and society as a whole. The case has raised serious concerns within the Horsham community, prompting discussions about safeguarding and the importance of vigilance in protecting children from exploitation.
