PETER LLOYD OF WEM SENTENCED FOR HORRIFIC CHILD SEXUAL ABUSE IN SHROPSHIRE
In a case that has shocked the community of Wem and the wider Shropshire area, Peter Lloyd, a man aged 59 who had previously served a prison sentence, was brought to justice for a series of heinous crimes involving the sexual abuse of young girls. Lloyd, who was released in September 2017 after serving seven years behind bars, was found guilty of multiple counts of child sexual offenses during a court hearing at Shrewsbury Crown Court. The court heard that Lloyd's criminal activities spanned several years, during which he targeted two young girls, subjecting them to a pattern of abuse that worsened over time. The first victim, who was only eight years old when the abuse began, endured a five-year ordeal from 1998 to 2003. The second girl, aged nine at the start of her victimization, was abused over a three-year period from 2002 to 2005. Both girls suffered repeated sexual assaults, including rapes, which inflicted lasting emotional trauma.
Peter Lloyd was convicted on multiple counts, including the rape of a child under 13, with a sentence of 15 years to run concurrently. He was also found guilty of two counts of rape, attempted rape, and four counts of indecent assault, each carrying a 15-year sentence to be served concurrently. Additional charges included two counts of sexual assault of a female child under 13, with a five-year concurrent sentence, two counts of indecency with a child, and other indecent assault charges, which resulted in sentences of 18 months and 12 months, respectively, also served concurrently.
Despite the total of 63 years in potential sentences, the court ordered that most of these terms run concurrently, resulting in an overall prison sentence of 15 years. The judge emphasized the severity of Lloyd’s actions, noting the profound and lasting damage inflicted upon his victims. The court was informed that Lloyd’s abuse had a deeply detrimental impact on the girls’ mental health, affecting them well into their teenage years and beyond.
During the proceedings, the victims provided emotional victim impact statements, describing Lloyd as a manipulative and abusive bully who used fear to silence them. Their testimonies highlighted the long-lasting scars left by his actions and the manipulation that kept them from speaking out for years.
As part of his sentence, Lloyd was ordered to register as a sex offender for life. Furthermore, he was prohibited from having any unsupervised contact or access to children under the age of 16, in an effort to prevent any further harm. The case has served as a stark reminder of the importance of vigilance and the ongoing need to protect vulnerable children from predators like Peter Lloyd, whose crimes have left indelible marks on the lives of his victims and the community of Wem.
