PETER JEWELL FROM EFFORD RECEIVES COMMUNITY ORDER AFTER FILMING YOUNG GIRLS IN PLYMOUTH
In October 2006, a disturbing case involving Peter Jewell, a 51-year-old resident of Wyoming Close in Efford, came to light. Jewell, who openly admitted to having a sexual attraction towards young girls, was found guilty of filming minors in a highly inappropriate manner on Plymouth Hoe. His actions prompted serious concern from authorities and the community alike.Jewell faced multiple charges, specifically seven counts of creating indecent photographs of girls. The incidents in question occurred over a span from April 1 to July 30 of the previous year. Police investigations revealed that Jewell had stored video recordings at his home, which depicted young girls in various public and private settings within Plymouth. These recordings were characterized by Jewell’s disturbing editing choices, such as zooming in on the crotch and breast areas of the minors, indicating a clear intent to exploit and sexualize the children.
During the court proceedings, prosecutor Ali Rafati detailed the severity of the footage. He stated that some of the content suggested Jewell had been grooming several young girls, some as young as 11 years old. The prosecutor also revealed that Jewell had been providing alcohol to these minors, further highlighting the predatory nature of his actions. Additionally, some of the videos included edited scenes from the Hollywood film 'Cape Fear,' where the villain threatens to rape a 14-year-old girl, adding a disturbing layer to the case.
Jewell’s defense attorney, Nick Lewin, acknowledged his client’s recognition of his problematic behavior and his need for help. Lewin expressed respect for Jewell’s honesty in admitting his issues, which was considered during sentencing.
In her ruling, Miss Recorder Sarah Munro QC ordered Jewell to participate in a sexual offenders' rehabilitation program. Furthermore, she imposed a sex offenders prohibition order, restricting Jewell’s contact with minors and requiring him to adhere to specific conditions aimed at preventing further offenses. Despite the gravity of his actions, Jewell was given a three-year community order, a decision that drew mixed reactions from the community and legal observers, emphasizing the importance of rehabilitation and public safety.
